Clinical Teaching Fellows (CTFs) are resident doctors who play a vital role in delivering medical education across NHS hospitals through their fellowship program. CTF programmes are now well established in many regions and significantly contribute to supporting learners at various stages of training.
CTFs are qualified doctors who take on a dedicated role in clinical teaching, either alongside or instead of routine clinical duties. Many pursue these fellowships after completing Foundation Training and before entering specialty training, or as an out-of-programme year during specialty training before advancing toward consultant practice. This position allows fellows to cultivate expertise in teaching, supervision, simulation, research, and curriculum design and delivery while remaining closely connected to frontline clinical care.
In collaboration with senior clinicians, clinical supervisors, and medical educators, CTFs provide support to both undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors. Their role is particularly crucial in ensuring high-quality, consistent teaching and pastoral support within busy and complex clinical environments.
By bridging the gap between learners and senior staff, CTFs foster a supportive learning culture that promotes clinical competence, professional development, confidence, and safe patient care.
